Nanos: el monte de casa.

La montagna di casa per i triestini ed i goriziani perché veloce da raggiungere e tuttavia già ambiente alpino: il Monte Nanos.

Mount Nanos is considered in Triest and Gorizia our backyard mountain, being quick to reach but already offering an alpine environment.

Per me è stata una scoperta, l'avevo sempre affrontato dal versante sud, caldo e soleggiato tanto da rendere la salita una faticaccia anche in pieno inverno, figuriamoci durante la botta di calore che ci ha colpito fuori stagione...

For me it has been a discovery, since I was used to its southwards exposed paths, hot and sunny even in middle winter and simply unthreadable during recent heat wave...

Desiderosa di frescura tuttavia, e complici una carta appena acquistata ed una guida presa nella locale biblioteca, ho scoperto che è possibile raggiungere, se non la cima, almeno l'altipiano in macchina. La vecchia strada militare che sale da Podnanos è tuttavia bloccata da un divieto di transito non so quanto temporaneo, quindi dopo alcuni cambiamenti di programma in corso d'opera, mi sono trovata, quasi per caso, sulla strada che sale da Vipava alla fattoria Abram.
Percorso delizioso, che raccomando soprattutto ai ciclisti, ed incantevole meta, a quota 900, perfetta come punto di partenza per ulteriori escursioni...

Looking for fresh mountain air however, and with the complicity of a map and a travel book, i found out you can reach the plateau by car. The old military road from Podnanos is however (temporally?) blocked, so after a few fine course adjustments i found myself on the road that from Vipava reaches Abram's Farm, in the middle of the plateau. It is a delicious road, perfect for bikers, and Abram's Farm (at 900 m above sea level) is a perfect start for further explorations...

Rio dei Gamberi

Non lontano da Postumia (Postojna) si trova il parco naturale di Rakov Skocjan dove il Rio dei Gamberi compie il suo breve percorso in superficie prima di venire inghiottito da un sifone nella Grotta del Tessitore e continuare il suo percorso in quel groviera calcareo che è il Carso per sfociare infine nella Pivka.
In poco più di due chilometri tuttavia percorre un territorio di una bellezza unica, ricco di meraviglie naturali, di cui il grande ponte naturale è forse la più fotografata...
Naturalmente la sottoscritta appena può preferisce l'arte alla tecnologia, anche perché un quadro "en plain air" offre maggiori opportunità di godere della bellezza del posto che non un rapido scatto ;)

Not far from Postojna lies the Natural park Rakov Skocjan, where the Rak brook briefly appears on the earth surface before continuing its underground course towards the river Pivka.
The 2km long valley however is a place of enchanting beauty, rich of natural jewels, among which the Great Natural Bridge (Veliki Naravni Most) is maybe the most photographed.
But a plein air artwork offers a greater opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the spot than a quick camera shot, so your faithful has preferred her oil pastels to her camera...

Saline

Nel medioevo tutto l'alto Adriatico era ricchissimo di saline ed il commercio del sale era un'importante fonte di reddito. Infatti, nonostante l'area si trovi abbastanza a nord e l'insolazione non sia eccessiva, l'evaporazione dell'acqua è favorita dal forte vento che spira da queste parti. Nell'era moderna tuttavia l'espansione urbanistica le ha fatte in gran parte sparire... l'area del Borgo Teresiano occupa il sito di antiche saline, come pure il quartiere di Valmaura, le zone industriali di Trieste e di Muggia, per non parlare della Marina di Portorose.

During Middle Age the northern adriatic coast was rich of saltpans and salt trade was an important source of income for local populations. In spite of the fact that the area is located so northwards where sun radiation isn't that strong, infact, sea water evaporation is favorited by the strong local wind.
During Modern age however most of the saltpans disappeared due to urban expansion... Borgo Teresiano and the suburbs of Valmaura in Trieste, the industrial areas of Trieste and Muggia, as well as Portoroz turist harbour, all are situated on the site of pre-existant saltpan works.

Le uniche saline rimaste al giorno d'oggi sono quelle nelle baie di Strugnano e di Sicciole. Ancora attive fino alla seconda guerra mondiale, hanno poi subito una fase di decadenza e di abbandono.
Fortunatamente la Repubblica Slovena, pur contando su un'estensione costiera di si e no una trentina di chilometri, ha ritenuto di dover valorizzare questo importante patrimonio storico e naturalistico. Le antiche saline sono oggi in parte Parco Naturale e Museo all'aperto ed in parte nuovamente in uso per l'estrazione del sale.

The only saltpan works still in existence can be found in the bays of Strunjan and Sečovlje. They were active until Second World War, after which they underwent a phase of decay and desertion.
Luckily Slowenian Republic, in spite of its coastline length amounting to less than 40km, took the decision to restore this important natural and historic heritage. Nowadays the old saltpans are a Natural Park and Museum and in part are back in use for the extraction of sea salt.

Passeggiare lungo le vasche e i canali è un'esperienza davvero unica e di grande suggestione.
Avere poi la scusa di sostarci a lungo per lavorare "en plein air" poi si avvicina alla completa felicità :)

A lazy walk along the saltpans ponds and channels is a unique and enchanting experience.
But when you have the excuse to stay there longer to work "en plein air"... well, in my opinion this is next to perfect happiness ;)

"La macchina" - 2008

Col termine "macchina" i salineri chiamavano le pompe a vento introdotte all'inizio del ventesimo secolo per estrarre l'acqua dalle vasche. Alcune macchine sono state restaurate e nei mesi caldi sono di nuovo in funzione.

The word "macchina" (=machine) was used by saltpan workers for the wind pumps that were introduced at the beginning of twentieth century. Abandoned after Second World War, some of them have recently been restored and demonstrations are held during summer months.

Castel Lueghi

Uso per questo castello, meglio noto col nome di Predjama, il nome con cui l'ho scoperto la prima volta, da bambina, perché mi riporta al favoloso mondo di avventure legate al cavaliere bandito Erasmo Lueger che si faceva beffe dell'esercito assediante tirando loro addosso frutta e verdura fresca... Il labirinto sotterraneo che mette in collegamento la grotta alle spalle del castello con l'altipiano sovrastante e, si dice, persino col piume Vipacco, infatti gli permetteva di far arrivare anche durante l'assedio provvigioni fresche. Erasmo venne ucciso per il tradimento di un servo che fece sapere ai nemici il luogo dove il cavaliere si ritirava per la notte, luogo che ovviamente fu fatto bersaglio dei loro colpi.



This Castle is better known as "Predjama Castle", but i prefer its older name, the first name i was told as a child, since it reminds me of the adventures of its owner, the bandit Erazmus Lueger. The legend says that during a siege he used to mock the besieging soldiers by dropping on their heads fresh fruits and vegetables. The maze of tunnels that links the cave behind the castle with the above plateau and, so they say, with Vipava river infact allowed him a constant contribution of food from the surrounding farms. Erazmus was killed by treason: one of his servants told his enemies the place where the knight used to sleep, and that place of course became their target.



Benché a non più di mezz'ora di macchina da Trieste, erano almeno quindici anni che non ci andavo... sicuramente da prima delle recenti ristrutturazioni. Ho trovato il posto assolutamente delizioso, circondato da un paesaggio da favola :)



Although there is no more than half an hour drive from Trieste, I haven't been there for at least fifteen years. For sure it was before recent renewing works... I found it absolutely pleasant and surrounded by a faery tale landscape...
