Il regno dei Fanes - Capitolo I

Il Trattato

The Treaty

Once upon a time, in a hidden valley among the Pale Mountains dwelt a people called Fanes. They had hidden there many centuries before, to escape from their enemies and for a long time they had managed to live peacefully, attending their flocks and growing barley and wheat. A treaty with the neighbouring people of the Marmots assured stability to their borders, but there was a condition: whenever in the royal family two twins should be born, one was to be sent to the allies, to be brought up according to their lifestyle...

And one day the queen gave birth to two beautiful girls. Although they were twins, they could have never been more different. One of the twins was blond, lively and shining like the sun and was called Dolasilla. The other was pale and quiet like the moon and was called Lujanta. The king was not very happy: he would have preferred two boys, to bring them up like warriors, since he was a mighty king, with great ambitions and the peaceful life in the hidden valley didn't suit him... The king didn't belong to the Fanes people, he had just married the queen, and didn't know about the ancient treaty... had he known however, he would have laughed, since he despised the peaceful and sleepy Marmots.

So the ambitious king made his own treaty with the fiery Eagles, under similar conditions... And one night, as the queen was sleeping, he sent one of his squires with the twins all wrapped in blankets to the top of the Sass dla Porta, the mountain overhanging his realm, so that the Eagle king could choose the twin he wanted. When the squire came back to the castle with the little Dolasilla, the queen was overwhelmed by joy. Lujanta, in fact, had already been secretly sent to the Marmots and the little creature the eagle had taken away with him was a marmot cub. But the treaty with the Eagles was broken, and also the Marmots, still faithful to the queen, refused to have anything to do with the unloyal king and retreated in their hidden tunnels... For the Fanes people a long period of war and destruction was to begin...

The realm of Fanes is a Dolomites saga. The most famous version is the one colleted By C. F. Wolff in his book "The pale mountains". The legend of Moltina, the first Fanes queen, can be considered chapter zero in this saga.

Moltina e la Croda Rossa.
Moltina and the Red Mountain.

The Dolomites are known as "pale Mountains" because of their silvery color that however turns into the most incredible shades of pink, red and purple at sunrise and sunset. But there is one of them, the "Croda rossa" (Rotwand in German, both meaning red wall/mountain) that mantains her red color all the time. This is the legend of this mountain.

Once upon a time there lived, at the feet of the Croda (not yet Rossa) an old Anguana (wise woman dwelling near the water) who was able to talk with marmots. One day a woman called Molta arrived to her with her baby daughter. The woman was so tired for the travel that she hardly managed to entrust the baby to the anguana before she died. So the anguana called the girl Moltina and brought her up in her mountain dwelling, afar from human beings. Moltina grew with marmots, she learned their language and sometimes she was even able to turn into one of these creatures herself.

One day there arrived a prince from a far away land who had got lost while hunting. He met Moltina an the two of them fell in love. After living for a while with her, the prince wanted to go back to his realm, bringing Moltina with him as his wife and queen.

But the life in the royal palace didn't suit Moltina who became sadder as days went on. However she stayed, for the love of her prince.

But one day there was a royal gathering. Kings and queens from all the neighborhoos met and while the kings were discussing royal affairs, the queens got bored. One of them so suggested each of them should reveal her origin and her ancestors. Moltina felt very ashamed, because she had no ancestors, and her origin was as far as she knew, nothing more than a marmot hole, so blushing violently she run away from the royal palace, back to her old land were marmots played in the mountain meadows. And the Croda shared Moltina's shame and blushed vividly.

Some time later there arrived the prince. He had understood everything and for the love of his wife he accepted to live with her in the mountains. So they lived happily, but the mountain is still blushing...

Mount Nanos is considered in Triest and Gorizia our backyard mountain, being quick to reach but already offering an alpine environment.

For me it has been a discovery, since I was used to its southwards exposed paths, hot and sunny even in middle winter and simply unthreadable during recent heat wave...

Looking for fresh mountain air however, and with the complicity of a map and a travel book, i found out you can reach the plateau by car. The old military road from Podnanos is however (temporally?) blocked, so after a few fine course adjustments i found myself on the road that from Vipava reaches Abram's Farm, in the middle of the plateau. It is a delicious road, perfect for bikers, and Abram's Farm (at 900 m above sea level) is a perfect start for further explorations...

Not far from Postojna lies the Natural park Rakov Skocjan, where the Rak brook briefly appears on the earth surface before continuing its underground course towards the river Pivka.
The 2km long valley however is a place of enchanting beauty, rich of natural jewels, among which the Great Natural Bridge (Veliki Naravni Most) is maybe the most photographed.
But a plein air artwork offers a greater opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the spot than a quick camera shot, so your faithful has preferred her oil pastels to her camera...

Saline

During Middle Age the northern adriatic coast was rich of saltpans and salt trade was an important source of income for local populations. In spite of the fact that the area is located so northwards where sun radiation isn't that strong, infact, sea water evaporation is favorited by the strong local wind.
During Modern age however most of the saltpans disappeared due to urban expansion... Borgo Teresiano and the suburbs of Valmaura in Trieste, the industrial areas of Trieste and Muggia, as well as Portoroz turist harbour, all are situated on the site of pre-existant saltpan works.

The only saltpan works still in existence can be found in the bays of Strunjan and Sečovlje. They were active until Second World War, after which they underwent a phase of decay and desertion.
Luckily Slowenian Republic, in spite of its coastline length amounting to less than 40km, took the decision to restore this important natural and historic heritage. Nowadays the old saltpans are a Natural Park and Museum and in part are back in use for the extraction of sea salt.

A lazy walk along the saltpans ponds and channels is a unique and enchanting experience.
But when you have the excuse to stay there longer to work "en plein air"... well, in my opinion this is next to perfect happiness ;)

The word "macchina" (=machine) was used by saltpan workers for the wind pumps that were introduced at the beginning of twentieth century. Abandoned after Second World War, some of them have recently been restored and demonstrations are held during summer months.

Castel Lueghi

This Castle is better known as "Predjama Castle", but i prefer its older name, the first name i was told as a child, since it reminds me of the adventures of its owner, the bandit Erazmus Lueger. The legend says that during a siege he used to mock the besieging soldiers by dropping on their heads fresh fruits and vegetables. The maze of tunnels that links the cave behind the castle with the above plateau and, so they say, with Vipava river infact allowed him a constant contribution of food from the surrounding farms. Erazmus was killed by treason: one of his servants told his enemies the place where the knight used to sleep, and that place of course became their target.

Although there is no more than half an hour drive from Trieste, I haven't been there for at least fifteen years. For sure it was before recent renewing works... I found it absolutely pleasant and surrounded by a faery tale landscape...
